AT the rehearsal of the 50th Miss International pageant in Chengdu, China, I was watching Miss Malaysia Chantelle Chuah practising her salutary wave.
Then I overheard “Dia hanya main bola sepak, macam mana dia tahu model?” (She only plays football, how does she know how to model?”)
As a fellow Malaysian, I felt compelled to defend Chuah.
I turned to Bibi Abdul Jalil Pederson and said “But she is a world-class model.”

It turned out we were talking about two different girls. She was talking about her daughter, Nadia Pederson who is Miss Denmark and half Malaysian.

However, the crown did not go to Miss Malaysia or Miss Denmark.
It went to 19-year-old Miss Venezuela Elizabeth Mosquera.
She towers over most girls at 1.77m and does not speak a word of English.
She spoke entirely in Spanish during the question-and-answer session and at the press conference with a translator at hand.
First runner-up went to Miss Thailand Piyaporn Deejing and second runner-up was won by the host, Miss China Yuan Siyi.
Miss Japan and Miss Philippines were also in the final five and were crowd favourites, despite not winning anything.
