the 2011 Cayman R Porsche

At the 2010 LA Auto Show, Porsche introduced the world to the 2011 Cayman R.

As the 'R' suffix might suggest, the Cayman R is lighter, faster and altogether more sporty than either the standard Cayman or the Cayman S.

The Porsche Cayman R is powered by a tuned-up 3.4-litre six-cylinder engine developing 330 hp. In the standard Cayman R it sends its power to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox that propels the car from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 5.0 seconds. Or there is the option of the seven-speed Porsche Doppelkupplungsgetriebe (PDK) that reduces the acceleration time to 4.9 seconds. For an even faster sprint time, the Cayman R can be fitted with the optional Sport Chrono package, taking it to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 4.7 seconds.

The Porsche Cayman R's top speed is 175 mph (282 km/h) with manual gearbox, or 174 mph (280 km/h) with the PDK transmission. Its fuel consumption is 9.7 l/100 km (29.12 MPG) with six-speed gearbox and 9.3 l/100 km (30.37 MPG) with PDK.

One of the main goals of the designers and engineers during the development of the Cayman R was to improve the car even further in its performance, driving dynamics and agility through methodical weight reduction.

The largest savings on the Cayman R were achieved through the use of lightweight components and doing without convenience equipment. Just like the 911 GT3/GT3 RS andBoxster Spyder, an optional lithium-ion lightweight battery is also available. In addition, the top-spec Cayman R is equipped with the lightest 19 inch wheels Porsche offer. The complete rim set weighs less than 40 kgs (88 lbs).

Visually the Porsche Cayman R differs from the other Cayman models thanks to a reduction in ride-height - it sits 20mm lower to the ground than the Cayman S. The Cayman R also gets a fixed rear spoiler, black framed headlights, black side mirrors and Porsche lettering on the lower section of the doors.
